I haven't looked much into AoC... moreso WAR, but I miss the feeling of exploration in a new game. Currently leveling a priest in WoW with a buddy, but sooo boring. I wouldn't mind playing with you fools. I can always convince my roomate to play anything with me as well. I don't know how the game's class mechanics or grouping work, but what would ya'll need? I would want to play healer/support.

i've only played the pve intro for like lvls 1-5 and some random instanced pvp at lvl 20. there're a lot of classes and a lot of abililties but in actuality there's less variety than WoW. there are only a couple of "pure classes" with the rest being mashes of dps hybrids

the way the healing mechanics work in the game is ~95% weeeeaaak but stackable huge aoe hots. direct heals put 1min debuffs on you (loatheb lol) so i think the end game PvE is going to involve fighting giant groups of mobs rather than having a mikezilla tank forget to hit shield block while 10 guys try to Gheal spam him.

the game is more pvp based anyhow and EVERYONE does dps. look at a Priest of Mitra as they are the closest to pure support. i'm going Tempest of Set, Paul is probably going Conqueror, and Himora Dark Templar

I'm with you for casual Paul.

Definitely interested in the Priest of Mitra. However, the Bear Shaman looks interesting too, seems to play like a feral druid/shaman hybrid... would be great for solo play. Anyone in beta know enough about these guys to swing me either way?

I was considering playing, but after looking at the amount of time to reach max level I dont know anymore.I honestly would rather spend my time doing actuall real things now days, like creating some bomb oil paintings. But maybe I'll be high as shit one day and paul will persuade me into playing. Not to mention MGS4 is coming soon....

Aecosori
05-13-2008, 05:17 PM
From what I've read it will take as few as 4 days to max if you know what you're doing (played beta) and maybe 6-8 for an experienced mmo'er. 10 tops. That's pretty short for 80 levels. MSG4 isn't for a few more weeks, and isn't going to be time intensive.

Yeah I was reading it takes about 250hours, 250hours that could be better spent in my opinion. Im slowly seeing myself turn to shorter more immersive experiances that are coming to the ps3. After WoW I dont think there will ever be a game like that again in my life where so much time is invested, that in the end is really for nothing.

I would be lying if I said to someone that all that time raiding was for nothing; at least I had alot of fun and got a lot of hilarious stories/memories out of it, slightly better than saying i spent 250 hours sitting in a corner, if only just a little.

the game is all about melee"combos" so the bear shaman is where it's at if you want the visceral mortal kombat style blood splatterage. however from what i've read the priest of mitra is pretty much the king of cc come end game and "overpowered"

and yeah, i agree, casual is the way to go ;x
putting social aspects aside, the most enjoyment that i derived from the actual gameplay of WoW was from leveling up my first toons. slow down, enjoy the ride. age of conan also appears to have a pretty engaging single player story line "destiny quest" with voice overs from NPCs so leveling won't be traditional mmo grind grind grind ding

iLL
05-13-2008, 06:51 PM
Sure there was fun, connections, and great experainces associated, but I am sure the time could have been spent in a more productive way. And as time goes on you do have to come to the realization that yes, it was you spending all that time in a corner.

Aecosori

I was more or less "imprisoned" during my three years of WoW raiding... gave me a lot of time to play where all I would have been doing otherwise was maybe studying or working out. WoW is better than both of those. I certainly don't wan't to bash WoW or a raiding lifestyle, especially on these forums, because to be honest I definitely still try to live vicariously through our raiders and would like nothing less than to see world first KJ. Man, I respect the dedication and skill this takes.

As a source of entertainment, WoW stimulated (for lack of a better word) me beyond what any other means such as film, music, etc., could possibly achieve. It provided a range of emotions that you simply can't get through those sources. I mean, look at your nerves during and the overwhelming relief and excitement following our C'thun kill. Look at the frustration when we had 8 minutes on our flasks prior to engaging 4hm one last time for the night, the renewed hope when Poletyka handed out 40 of his private stock, and the pride you took in I L L I S T R... err, M I N I S T R Y when lady bitchface and the gang finally ate shit. Look at the anger you felt (or whatever emotion it was) when Michael Zilla lied to you, Riall (who I still talk to from time to time) bitched out about sitting on Nef, or Ody ran away with the guild bank. And of course the priceless immature comedy from so many of you goons... "Thunderclamp!" This is why we played.

You won't find this kind of experience for a long time. And I think this is the redeeming quality of it all. The reason why it was better to play this game for 150 days than it was to "sit in a corner." I think there's a lot to be said about the genre and of online gaming in general. This range of emotions, creating friendships, and dealing with social situations and politics may be more of a learning and growing experience than any of us give it credit for. Of course, our real life friends give us a hard time about killing internet dragons, and often I wish I had taken the night off from raiding (in retrospect) in order to go out and have a good time with them, but we're young (I'm a young 23), and there's plenty of time to make up for what you feel you missed. But I definitely don't regret playing. And when the game comes along that can replicate this, I will play that game. AoC or WAR isn't it, and it'll take a long time to come into being. The only thing I would do differently, is ALWAYS give precedence to your friends and family, which is why I'll be playing casual for the time being.

Anyways, AoC seems pretty tight... Aeco will be a PoM in all likelyhood. Unless all the shitty players roll it because they think it's overpowered. In which case Bear Shammy. Even if it actually is currently, I've seen enough nerfs as a Druid to last a lifetime, and I don't think my heart can take too many more, and there definitely will be more.

EDIT: @ Kyle - I couldn't agree more. Exploring an unfamiliar world for the first time. Learning the game mechanics, interface, the novelty of it is great. I'm going to level like a slug.

iLL
05-13-2008, 08:29 PM
Well said aeco haha. I'm not going to say my experaince in WoW was meaningless, because in the end for me it did have a positive impact on getting my life on the correct track. But during my active times in the WoW community it did have a negative impact on where I was headed and my priorities in life. Of course everyones experiances were different, although many will not admit it WoW does have many adverse affects to those, like me, that at some point put WoW ahead of other things happening in the real world.

And I do give still give credit for the guys and gals in exodus that continue to push on in the hardcore gaming arena, however, for those on the outside looking in, it is quite confusing on why they still do what they do. For example, those certain WoW superstars signing their autographs on napkins at hooters, in my opinion and my position now as quite the casuaul gamer, laughable.

I just personally think that when we all look back on this, at least those of us that go onto to try and solve real problems in this world, that we wont be telling stories to our children of our times in iron forge, killing hocken as many times as we could, the massive amount of time spent pvping to try and prove that we were the most badass or our pve kills where we felt like we had conquered the world.

Aecosori
05-13-2008, 09:23 PM
Oh hell no, I won't be telling my kids or grand kinds i killed night elves in Ironforge. What a sad legacy. What's nice is, 99% of us who have the drive to raid in a high end guild also have the drive to accomplish great things in real life, and move on to bigger and better things.

Fuck, I'm a helicopter pilot for the Army. The definition of bad ass. Kidding. But no, really. Seriously.

I'm going to tell them about the war. Funny thing is... they won't give a shit less, and they wouldn't give a shit less even if I did tell them about Ironforge. They're just going to run off and play on their fancy new future space supercomputers in some crazy fangled virtual reality mmo, 'shut the fuck up old man!" And then, I'm gonna hobble back to my old pos pc, and try to play the same game. You better believe when I'm old and decrepit I'll be playing video games, it's all we'll be able to physically do. And I'm even gonna make the old ball and chain farm gold for me. Man, it's gonna be great. I can't wait to retire.

Don't worry, the legacy of our generation isn't going to be WoW. We're all dead in 2012 anyhow.

fuck you guys man, im straight telling my entire kin of children and grandchildren about my journeys in the land of warcraft. nah but really wow was such a trip for me that can never be replaced i surely do not regret it at all. once i was done playing i had my own awakening that bruce(veldra) and i discuss every so often. i mean look how many people met up rl or live near each other or know people from other places or want to meet or talk on msn or only come to talk on vent or shit like that. if you think your time in wow was poorly spent then it probably was, there are people who played purely for the sake of progressing which is sad. ministry was an experience that can not be described in words i still get goose pumps thinking about our 4hm kill how fucking nuts it was i mean really tho, that shit was over the top big time. like i met andy martel ed an all those guys through this game also and now andy and i plan on going to china sometime next year. its shit like that thats insane and i look back onto it and its just like damn what a trip because i would probably never goto china if i hadnt met him and gotten to know more about it or byqoo or people like that and now i know if i ever goto FL i can go chill with ill nugs or anarchist or THADON. and like i met up with thizz him an i throw down all the time now an shit and we're going to magic mountain next month. i wouldnt say your time was wasted steven i mean if thats how you feel well then quite frankly i feel insulted

im going conquerer by the way gonna straight pump that ass out

Haha that was awesome aeco, and paul I love you man. Aeco your exactly right about those with the drive to accomplish great things. But its coming to the akawening to that fact , much as paul described in his own personal "rebirth". And you know it is the connections to guys like paul, and other ministry members such as the badass aecosori(jesus man wheres the free helicopter rides?) that keep me to coming back to a place like this.

wow is great because it kept me from heavy alcoholism and spending money at bars/clubs/strip clubs/restaurants. killing bosses that were hard/fun was nice and i met a whole ton of people who at least acknowledge my existance when i stop in to say hi, sot that's nice :). but yeah i know what you mean about it feeling "meaningless". with that same time i could have been taking college courses/etc and bettering myself to make more money in my career at the very least, or a whole world of other things. but fuck it, for the most part we're all young, aside from fucking valrath who sounds like he's 48 and smoked seven million cigarettes. (kidding ~)

All in all we play the game to enjoy it. Some in different ways than others. As long as you feel the friendships you made, the experiences you had and the people you curbstomped made you happy then the time spent was worth it.

Who got in to the early access? I did. Just wanted to know so we can coordinate a server when they pop. PvP ruleset obviously.

how these guys can be so fucking unorganized is beyond me :(
what really gets me is that for funcom early access is just another way to stress test right before launch ... except all those particiipating paid $5 and there're people who've ordered multiple copies of the game just to get EA

anyhow are these servers based on time zones or what??? it's funny b/c fuck my ass:
"I believe all US servers are located in NJ, save bloodspire." GGGGGG great for me, not so good for people out in...bigfoot territory, canada

Aecosori
05-15-2008, 03:08 PM
Nah Kyle, I went down to gamestop two days ago... preordered a copy, and they gave me the preorder key. I came home, entered it, and got in the EA. Easy. Sorry a lot of people got left out of it, I could really care less if i got in it or not. Lesson learned: preorder in store.

But you' re right, they still have the closed beta ongoing, and I bet the early access is plagued by patch after patch, server downtime, and hella bugs. The $5 actually gives you ten days of play time prior to your free month, so if I don't like the game after 40 days I'll cancel my subscription and never once pay the $15.

They're trying their best. =)
